Workshop Wednesday: Lanterns For Chinese New Year

Workshop Wednesday: Lanterns For Chinese New Year

With Chinese New Year falling later this week, my girls and I have been putting an Asian twist on our crafts. One of the easiest we've done, but they thoroughly enjoyed, was a set of Chinese Lanterns: a quick, easy and fun craft.

To make your own lanterns you will need:

  • Red A4 paper
  • Gold A4 paper
  • Cellotape
  • Glitter pens or other decorative tools
You can vary this craft depending on how much time you have and the age of your child. Either decorate the page before cutting - useful if you have small children - or leave it blank for later. We only had a few minutes while waiting for lunch, so we didn't decorate ours.
To start, fold the red page in half.

Next, cut from the closed side inwards, leaving a couple of inches at the open side.

Take the gold page - ours looks oddly green - and roll it into a tube, using tape or glue to stick it together.

Open up the red page, and roll it around the tube, glueing or taping the top and bottom edges.

Push the bottom of the red page up the tube a little to form the lantern. Cut about an inch off the gold bottom part of the tube.

Glue that vertically into the top to form a handle.

My girls were so proud of their lanterns, when we went for a walk later that day, they insisted on taking them with them, despite the sunshine.
