What lengths (no pun intended) would you go to in order to save cash when it comes to the costs of raising kids - would you cut their hair yourself to avoid paying a barber or hairdresser?
A new study has revealed the top hairdressing fails that parents inflict on their children and, according to the data compiled by hair and beauty salon business insurance provider SME Insurance, more than a third (35%) of mums and dads opt to cut their child's hair instead of taking them to a professional salon.
But the study found that 'scissor-happy' parents taking matters into their own hands results in some seriously bad hair days for kids. The most common parental hairdressing mistakes are:
- Inflicting a bad fringe (12%)
- Giving a wonky haircut (8%)
- Cutting or shaving their child’s hair too short (6%)
- Giving a “bowl cut” (5%)
The findings highlighted that one-in-five (21%) parents have made mistakes so dire that they’ve had to take their child to a professional hairdresser to get them fixed. This leaves 79% of children facing potential embarrassment.
Parents are most likely to stop cutting their child’s hair at the age of nine, however, 3% of parents admitted to continuing to cut their child’s hair well into adulthood.
ADULTHOOD?!

And one more thing. Do you kid a favour and step away from the scissors. They'll thank you for your restraint, one day.
