Have you got a running away fund?
Don't make that innocent face – you know what I mean. A secret stash of cash that no-one knows about, which you're squirrelling away for, um, a rainy day. Or, you know, a sudden exit.
According to a new study, nearly a quarter of British women are hiding a considerable sum of cash from their husband or partner.
Researchers polled 1500 women and discovered that the typical female has £2,768 in cash or in secret bank accounts that they are purposely keeping from their other half. Wowza.
And while 31 percent of women are squirrelling away money for an exotic holiday, 23 percent are saving on the quiet in case they need an ‘exit strategy’ from their relationship.
More than one in ten (12 percent) of women have at least one account set up in their maiden name in order to keep it incognito.
However, the average female said she would need at least £21,164 in order to set up a new life away from her current husband or boyfriend. WOWZA.
In fact, 13 percent of ladies have even entrusted the help of their mum and dad to hide the cash for them and nearly one in twenty often give lump sums to their best friend to stash away. Nearly one in ten have gone the extra mile to avoid suspicion and have even opened an off-shore account for their savings. Ok that's pretty sinister and a step well beyond my running away fund, which is basically my gin and books fund.
A spokesperson for autoeurope.co.uk, who conducted the poll, said: “It is wise to have some savings set aside, but personal preference whether you want to share your finances with your other half or not.
“However, it could seem one sided if one partner is openly sharing knowledge about their savings and investments and the other is slyly squirrelling away their money.
Hmm, you think?!
The poll found that 26 percent of women who have secret funds did feel guilty about it, but 16 percent felt it couldn’t hurt to have some cash saved for a rainy day. I quite agree.
Over a quarter of the 1,500 women studied said it was vital to remain financially independent whether you were in a relationship or not.
However, a hypocritical 42 percent said they would be furious if their partner had savings they weren’t aware of.
In contrast, 58 percent of ladies said they would be thrilled if their partner announced he had a secret stash of his own.
A devious one in twenty said if they ever found cash in the house, they would just take it.
