Heritage Open Days is a once a year opportunity to explore and discover hundreds of hidden gems in local history, and the best thing is that it's completely free.
Run by volunteers there are events all across the UK ranging from historic houses, gardens, tours, museums and more, as well as the chance to see places that are not normally open to the public.
If you or your children are interested in history, art, architecture or nature then they should find lots to see and do, and many of the events are aimed specifically at children.
In England it's called Heritage Days, and in the rest of the UK it's Doors Open Days. Each country has it's own website and dates vary by site.

The Heritage Open Days was set up by the National Trust, so to be able to visit some of their properties without having to pay would make a fantastic free day out, and might just spark a new interest for your child.
There are events across the whole of the UK, and you can find all the information on the link above.
